A Kindergarten Teacher Made Me Think

To sell, you don't need to fake it. If you think you do... you've been misled. Look.

To sell, you don't need to fake it.

And if you think you do... you've been misled.

Look.

Yesterday, I went to a park with my kids.

Nothing out of the ordinary.

Swings.

Obstacle courses.

A rope pyramid for climbing.

Challenges for every child.

Overcoming fears.

Moving in unfamiliar ways.

Comparing themselves to their siblings.

Wanting to be like them.

And watching them there, I remembered a quote from one of my kids' kindergarten teachers:

"Therapies began when children stopped going to parks."

And yes. She's absolutely right.

Today, children attend therapy for everything.

But it wasn't always this way.

There was a time when kids were just kids.

They went out to play.

They scraped their knees.

And they grew.

But not today.

Today, we want to replace the natural with something artificial.

Places that mimic reality.

So children can develop.

So they can overcome fears.

So they can learn to navigate the world.

Natural was replaced by false.

And it's not just with children.

In sales, we do the same thing.

We want a magic technique.

A trick.

Something to make people buy.

How many times have we wanted our salespeople to learn a magic technique to hypnotize their clients?

So they listen.

So they speak.

So they feel understood.

So they buy without knowing what hit them.

The problem?

It's all fake.

As if selling well meant acting and pretending.

And no.

Selling is natural.

Selling is serving.

It's helping someone achieve something.

Something your product can contribute to.

So, where did we go wrong?

When we changed serving the customer

for serving yourself from the customer.

That's where everything went downhill.
