Knives in the Ground

Seller's hands delivering a product to a customer over the counter

This weekend I was at a kids' party.

One of those with inflatables.

Kids running around, soaking wet.

And parents looking at the sky with worried faces.

Because it was cloudy.

Then, one of my kids tugged my shirt.

"Dad, what's that?"

He pointed to the grass.

There were two knives stuck in the ground.

Do you know why?

There's a superstition that says if you stick a knife in the ground, it won't rain.

Yes.

Just as you hear it.

You stick a knife.

And supposedly you control the weather.

Sounds ridiculous.

Because it is.

The weather isn't going to change because of what you do with a knife.

But there's something interesting:

at least you feel like you did something.

That you didn't just stand by.

And then it hit me.

What does that resemble in your business?

All those efforts you make.

But that don't really change anything.

For example:

customer service training and sales techniques training.

Yes.

That sales or service training you paid for with good intentions.

That excited everyone that day.

And that a week later, no one applies.

Don't take my word for it.

More than 70% of people forget what they learned in training in less than a year.

Because training isn't magic.

And by itself, it doesn't work.

If you train your team but then there's no:

1. boss reinforcing it every day

2. tools making it easy to apply

3. someone observing and correcting in the moment

then you're not training.

You're sticking knives in the ground.

And hoping it stops raining.

Now, think about it:

What are 3 behaviors that, if your team did them every day, would change your results?

Do you have them?

Then ask yourself:

Are you teaching them so clearly that a sixth-grader could understand?

Do you have routines to reinforce it?

Or did you just give a training and hope "something happens"?

Because there's the difference.

Between companies that change results.

And companies that stick knives in the ground.
