Piled-Up Tequilas

There's a vice that destroys businesses.
And it almost always disguises itself as strategy.
It's discounts. The damn discounts.
Look.
About 10 years ago, I wasn't doing well.
My business was crumbling, my health was worsening, and my self-esteem was at rock bottom.
I was always tired, with a tight chest and a head full of noise.
And every time my wife said:
"We have a wedding this Saturday,"
I felt tortured.
I didn't want to be there.
I didn't want to socialize.
I didn't want to pretend I was having a good time.
Until I found a quick escape:
tequila.
It helped me let loose.
To forget my anxieties for a while.
To get through those nights without feeling like I was dragging myself down inside.
And yes. For a while, it worked.
I became the "cool husband" who went to the bar to order piled-up tequilas.
"Piled Uuuup!"
It even looked like I was having a good time.
Until the bill came.
Gastritis.
More weight.
Less control.
And the worst part:
I felt like I couldn't function the same without alcohol.
I became dependent.
And that's when I understood something:
Some things make you feel like you've solved the problem...
when in reality, you're just numbing it.
In business, it's discounts.
When you lower the price, everything seems to flow.
Customers adore you.
Sales finally move.
Your numbers go up.
But then the hangover hits.
You sold more, but you earned less.
And you also trained your customers to only seek you out when you have sales.
Discounts don't solve your problem. They numb it.
That's why it feels so good at first.
It gives you quick relief.
It makes you believe you've found the way out.
But it doesn't fix the underlying issue.
It just gets you used to depending on something that gives you less and less each time.
If you can only sell by lowering the price, you don't have a strategy. You have a crutch.
Last year, I talked about this on Martha Debayle's show.
If you want to listen, here's the podcast:

Warmly,
Carlos.
