A Shock Bracelet

I once wore a bracelet that gave me electric shocks to become more disciplined.

Not a metaphor.

Not an exaggeration.

The idea was simple:

every time I wasted time on social media, it gave me a shock.

I thought that would fix me.

Reality said no.

At that time, I was newly married.

My business needed to grow.

I had promised results.

And every three months I had to explain why they hadn't arrived.

It wasn't the best time to waste time.

But I did.

I'd hop on social for "just a second."

And by the time I snapped out of it, hours had passed.

Then I found "the solution."

A bracelet that gives you electric shocks when you don't do what you said you would.

It was called Pavlok.

I bought it, convinced this would finally make me better.

I put it on.

I got a notification.

I fell for it.

And I gave myself the first shock.

Then another.

And another.

And another.

After a week, I had a wound on my wrist.

And my addiction was still there.

That's when I understood something.

Change is hard.

Making someone else change is hard, too.

And when you have a business, that's not optional.

You need others to change.

  • To provide better service.
  • To care for the customer experience.
  • To do their job well. Even when you're not there.

Your team doesn't change just because you're convinced.

They don't change because you repeat it.

Or because they "should."

If you want to understand how to achieve this without forcing people,

I'll leave you with this conference:
