I Hate Piñatas

I have 4 kids.

So I've been to way too many kids' parties.

And there's one part I detest:

the darn piñata.

Why?

Because, if you think about it, it's a pretty dumb idea.

First, you have kids hit their favorite character.

Lightning McQueen, Buzz Lightyear, or Moana end up decapitated, with eyes popping out and full of holes.

Then you give them a wooden stick they can barely control and release them into a mob of desperate children.

And in the end, you make them fight for candy as if they've never eaten one in their lives.

So you see kids sprawled on the floor, grabbing candy like little smugglers and hiding it between their legs.

At every piñata, there's a crying child.

Because they didn't get anything.

Because someone snatched the little they had. Or because they almost got their head cracked open when a candy hit them straight in the face.

It's a nuisance.

Basically, you make them humiliate themselves for candy.

Many sell like that.

Humiliating themselves for a sale.

Lowering the price.

Running promotions all the time.

Begging for their customers' attention.

Offering the exact same thing as the next guy. And hoping that by luck, customers will choose them.

Like kids at a piñata.

Humiliating themselves for a few cents.

That's how they taught you to sell.

And that's why you work so hard and still don't see the results you expected.

The problem isn't a lack of effort. It's that you sell like everyone else.

And when you sell like everyone else, you beg like everyone else.

But there is another way.

Stop selling like everyone else.

Be different.

And make the customer desire you.
