Well, Go Get Me a Coke

"If you say serving is the way, then go get me a Coke!" Some people have told me that.

Empty waiting room with a service bell on the counter

"If you say serving is the way

then go get me a Coke!"

Some people have told me that.

When they see me with a shirt

that states my cause:

serving is the way.

They've also told me things like:

"Let's see... serve me water. You're here to serve me, right?"

And yes, it's funny.

But it also says something important.

That for many people, serving means making yourself small.

Lowering yourself.

Putting up with things.

Not giving an opinion.

Not contradicting.

As if serving means bending over so the client can walk all over you.

It's a big problem.

Because if you believe that, your team does too.

And then this happens:

They attend...

but they don't guide.

They listen...

but they don't advise.

They respond...

but they don't truly help.

Why?

Because they believe they can't get involved.

That they can't offer an opinion.

That they can't tell the client they're making a mistake.

And so they step aside.

And when you step aside...

you become useless.

Learn this:

Serving is not subordinating yourself.

Serving is helping someone achieve something.

But as equals.

Without bending over.

Without belittling yourself.

When you understand that, everything changes.

You can look them in the eye.

Ask them questions.

Tell them what really benefits them.

And what doesn't.

That's when you start generating real value.

Now, think about it:

Does your team believe serving is helping?

Or do they believe serving is putting up with things?

And that's why they become order-takers in uniform.

And that's why they're not taken seriously.

If this resonated with you, I wrote an entire book about it:

I Am Here to Serve You.
