You Don't Deserve Applause

A team's results reflect its leader.

And most leaders suck.

That's why their teams sell less, serve worse, and perform poorly.

The good news is that this can change.

Look.

Yesterday I went to watch my son play tennis.

Nothing special.

An activity at the place where he trains.

And there I was, thinking:

"What a good dad I am."

"I'm present for him."

"When he looks up, he'll see me there."

And yes.

I think I'm a good dad.

But there's nothing special about me going to watch him.

That's the bare minimum someone who decided to have a child should do.

Be present.

You don't deserve applause.

You don't deserve a medal.

That's your job.

But some people want recognition for simply doing what they're supposed to do.

In short:

Being present doesn't make you extraordinary.

It makes you responsible.

The same goes for leaders.

For those who really change what people do.

Those who can cause mediocrity or high performance.

Those who make a team sell or not sell.

To provide service or be indifferent.

Those leaders also have minimums.

Reinforce the behaviors they expect.

Correct those who make mistakes.

Have one-on-one conversations.

Because a leader doesn't change results with speeches.

They change them with habits, follow-up, and correction.

And if they do that, they're not "great bosses."

They're doing their job.

The minimum expected of them.

The problem is that many were good salespeople.

And now they're bad bosses.

Because a team almost always ends up resembling the person who leads it.
