"So, Dad, now you can spend more time with us?"

It was 7:56 AM, on a Sunday.

I was in the living room reading a book.

All alone.

Then my big kids appeared.

Just woken up.

David asked me:

—Dad, did you finish creating your robot?

He was referring to a system (like a FAX machine) I put together to receive work things at home.

To use less WhatsApp.

And focus better.

I stayed up until midnight working on it.

But it worked.

— It’s done and it works, I told him, excited.

I’ve read that dads should involve our kids in our work.

Tell them about our challenges, our failures, our fears.

That makes us human.

And it teaches them more than any sermon in the car.

So I explained to them:

The people on my team will send me things there they need my help with.

I’ll read them and respond.

Without being distracted all day.

I felt proud. A great example of a dad, a professional who automates everything he can and leaves a great lesson for his children. Until a question disarmed me.

Moisés, in his little just-woken-up voice, hit me with:

—So, Dad, now you can spend more time with us?

I felt the punch in the chest. It caught me off guard.

In short, he was asking me:

And all that you work on, that you strive for, that you invent… will it be for anything?

At eight years old, Moisés said between the lines:

It’s great you like what you do, but all I want is for you to spend more time with me.

Has this happened to you?

That you work more… and in the end, you are less present?

Many times, we get confused.

We start walking towards a place where we’re supposed to be freer

and end up being prisoners.

We believe work will bring us rewards.

And sometimes it becomes our jailer.

Today I just want you and me to ask ourselves one question:

Why am I doing this?

The sleepless nights.

The mind that doesn’t stop.

Not even when we are home.

Perhaps it’s to live with more peace of mind.

Or to share quality time with your family.

Or simply to feel peace and be able to sit and read a book on a Sunday morning.

It doesn’t matter what your answer is.

Just don’t forget it.

Because perhaps you are acting in reverse.
